How To Open A Durian

Kids these days seem to think that durians come in cling wrap on polystyrene or in disposable plastic tupperwares. Pfft. What nonsense. You don't get to be called the King of Fruits if you didn't look bad-ass enough, okay?? And durians? They're super bad-ass. In looks... and in smell. Haha. So here's a simple 10-step tutorial for you guys. Ready? Ok. Opening A Durian 101.

1. Smack it with a chopper so it obeys!

2.  Stuff the sharp end of the chopper into the slit that is usually provided by your local durian seller.

3. Give the chopper a twist to widen the slit in the durian skin.

4. Put down the chopper and lok chiu! (Translation: Use your hands.) Just beware of the spiky thorns!

5. Rip the King of Fruits apart with your bare hands and feel like King Kong on steroids.

6. Stop to take a picture. =p

7.  Push down on both sides of the durian to crack the skin apart and reveal more of its hidden fruits.

8. Once the skin breaks apart a little, you can lok chiu again and peel it apart.

9. Try not to use your fingers on the durian meat cos your hands would have touched the outside of the skin. Very dirty and unhygienic. Instead, use the inner parts of one side of the skin to nudge the stuck bits.

10. Go knock yourselves out eating what is arguably the smelliest fruit in all the land. But my family usually eats our durians with rice (something relatively unheard of and untried by many of my friends) so... more of that in another post.
