Time Twist Thursday

Once a month, a couple members of KRPG and I – a.k.a the #KRServicingTrio – make our way over to the mainland for branding advisory sessions with a client of ours. Sessions typically start at 10.30am, which means we’ve got to hit the road by 8.15am in order to make two pick-up stops around the island, before crossing the bridge and heading over to the client's office.

Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge
– more fondly known to locals as the Penang Second Bridge.

But after one particularly traumatic drive involving a very dead and very dried-up crow at the Toll Plaza on our way back, and me falling sick TKO-style for over a week right after (I totally blame the crow – caused me too much stress) we started taking turns, Taiping Meeku and I. Just so this ECD doesn't suddenly fall sick again and leave the team in the lurch. LOL.

So that's what we've been doing – taking turns behind the wheel.
(Read: A little shared trauma, a lot of shared responsibility. 😆)

But today, the plan was a little different. You see, Penang tomorrow no water again. So one particular Taiping girl – not saying who but YOU KNOW WHO #iykyk – is abandoning the island and making a run for Taiping after the meeting. That meant one less pick-up for me cos she pandu sendiri.

Although she is literally "on the way" for me – only a 100m detour or so nia – I ended up being able to leave home at 8.45am, pick Hiyashi from all the way across the island, and still get to my meeting 15 mins early.

How come ah? I cannot brain.
But also... I won't complain. Haha.

Quit Playin' Games With My Heart

The boys have been begging us for a pet for a long while now. And not like a guppy or a terrapin that you contain in a glass box and feed once a day. No, no. They want a cat. 😺 Or a dog. 🐶 Like, wth? I blame all those playdates at friends' houses. One of JZ's friends has 7 pets of various kinds. Another has a new British Shorthair kitten. Craziest story is this: One of JJ's buddies has *drumroll please* 28 cats in his condo. 😵😵‍💫 #siaoliao

While The Husband (who's never really had a pet) is leaning towards ok-ing idea, I, on the other hand am not. Pets are A LOT of work! Living with two sporty pre-teens without a live-in helper is enough work as it is. I am not at all motivated to add more things to my to-do, to-wash and to-clean list, thank you. These people don't clear, wash and clean so they don't understand the amount of work that already comes with running a household of 2 adults and 2 kids. 😤

Now, you wanna make it
4 adults and 2 kids PLUS 1 pet??

Aiya, mai laaaaa...

Don't trouble Trouble if Trouble
hasn't trouble you la, come on! 😩

We visited CTY in Penang once with the intention of getting a pup for the boys. But after seeing the dogs step all over their poop, The Husband quickly made a mental U-turn and changed his mind. But today, while heading towards DPULZE Shopping Mall, Cyberjaya (that also has a big pet store), this conversation ensued:

The Husband: Ok la, boys! Let’s go get a dog!

 JZ & JJ: Yayyyy!!!

The Husband: We buy from DPULZE!

 JZ & JJ: Yayyyy!!!

 The Husband: Just kidding.

 JZ & JJ: Booooo…

JZ: Papa, if you want to say anything, and it’s a lie, don’t say it. Because you make us excited. Then you break our hearts.

JJ: Words of wisdom, Kor Kor.

 The Husband: Haha. Okay. Sorry.

JJ: Yes. Then you make us want to cry and die.

😅😅😅

Needless to say, we left DPULZE without a pet.

You know, it's too bad my boys
aren't familiar with the Backstreet Boys.
Otherwise, they'd be singing this tune right about now:

"Quit playin' games with my heart
Before you tear us apart (my heart)
Quit playin' games with my heart
I should've known from the start
You know you got to stop (from my heart)
You're tearing us apart (my heart)
Quit playin' games with my heart:

– Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)
by Backstreet Boys

Me, I'm definitely more of a dog person than a cat person.
And I do secretly love the idea of having a puppy at home. 🤫

But I've been there and done that with Princess. 🥲 I now understand that although having a pet has its fun and emotional upsides, the cleaning up after each poo and pee... the weekly baths... the nail-cutting and toothbrushing... the daily feeding and water filling... the inconvenience when going on holidays... and not to mention the heartbreak and emotional trauma that follows in the days after their deaths because, well, we'll definitely outlive our pets at this point... it's just not worth it.

I would be perfectly happy to go through life
without having to go through all this again.

That's not to say my kids should never get pets. They can get their own pets when they have their own homes. Then I'll go over for some doggy playtime. 😎

I Smell Weird

I was all stuffed into my bed for a cosy, cuddly, snuggly bedtime with the boys. JJ had his head propped on my right shoulder while JZ had his arms and legs wrapped around my left hand. Suddenly, JZ said...

JZ: *sniffs my shoulder* Mommy, you smell weird.

Pam Song: *incredulously* WHAT?! No way!

JZ: Yes! It’s weird

JJ: *protectively* No!! Mommy doesn’t smell weird!! Mommy always smells nice! Right, Mommy?

Pam Song: Of course! 😤

JZ: *insisting* Nooooo... It’s weird!!

Pam Song: Fine! Then I smell like what??

JZ: Like... like... honey and flowers. 🍯💐

Pam Song: 😳

So, dear future daughter-in-law, if ever my son tells you that you smell weird, it's okay. Don't take his comment as criticism. You probably just smell like honey and flowers. 😅😆

Walking The Gardens In A Post-COVID-19 Era

Hi hi! This picture of JJ and I from this afternoon's walk was so very easy to post. Already naturally blog-friendly and pre-censored. HAHA. 😎😷

I tell you, I really dunno whether to laugh or to cry la with this #newnormal – haih. Dah lah, I hate exercise. Now, have to bungkus up half the face to meet SOP lagi. So, end up become super-duper, extra, maximum hot and cannot breathe. Really beh tahan. 🥵

But Penang Botanical Gardens remains as green, grand and glorious as ever. I wish I could say that the grounds were as people-free as seen in this picture but... no such luck, mates. Even at 3-something, it was already teeming with sweaty folk 🤭 all desperately trying to cepat-cepat clock in their exercise time before the real crowd arrives a little later in the evening. I just very clever to sim sim (that’s Cantonese for dodge or avoid) take photo. 😆

Run, my children!

Run wild and free!

Solar flare! 🌈

I totally kena conned by the weather today la. It really looked like it was going to be cool and windy when we were still at home but nooooo... tipu wan. So damn hot. 🔥🔥🔥  If I knew it was going to be such a sauna, I wouldn't have suggested this for exercise in the first place. 🤐

A Peaceful, Misty Morning

Given that the land is blessed with an abundance of hills and seas, waking up in Penang often results in some pretty breathtaking views. This misty morn was no exception. ❤️ JJ spotted some low-hanging clouds in the distance while dressing for school and was really excited about it. So, we all stopped to just enjoy the calm of this cool morning for a bit.

You know how it is. School Mornings + Kids = Mad rush with lots of parental growling involved. 😅 So it was really nice to just put a pin on things, catch a breather, and enjoy the moment for a bit before the madness resumed.

Before we let the busyness of everyday life
steal away the calm and quiet of the night.

And ruin the view moment. 🏞

Yes, it was nice. 🙂

Storytime With Kong Kong – The Kampung Boy From Kedah

I grew up hearing stories of days gone by from my dad. Whenever I was in bed by 10.00pm, I was rewarded with a story. And each time, the story would begin in the exact same way...

"Behind my house was a paddy field...
Behind the paddy field was a rubber estate...
And behind the rubber estate were some train tracks."

I enjoyed hearing all about how he caught fighting fishes and trained them to fight and win. About how he rigged his rubber seeds with candle wax so he could crack his opponents' seeds effortlessly. How he caught spiders amongst the trees and let them fight to the death. And how he (very dangerously) put nails and stones on the train tracks so they would go flying all around when the trains sped by. #donttrythisathomekids

Having said all that,
I'm so glad that last night,
the boys listened to their very first
kampung-boy story from Kong Kong.

Updated storytime experience for a very visual and tech-savvy next gen, of course, with YouTube videos of fighting fishes jumping out of the water and attacking each other, for added effect. 🙄

Mother-Son One-To-One Tattoo Bonding Time

JJ decided that this afternoon, we would draw each other dino tattoos with the new Muji colour pens he received from Ah Ma and Ah Kong. So, like the good, tired, chemo-shot-up mom that I am, I agreed. So, draw dino tattoos, we did! I drew his and he drew mine.

I gave him a T-Rex, which I very uncreatively and unimaginatively named REX. 😂 Bagi chan la. It's Day 6 and I'm still aching from my last Nivestim™ shot of Chemo Round 2. This mom is tired max la. Just close one eye and move on, ok? 😅

JJ gave me a velociraptor and named it Travis.

He spelt its name all by himself! #proudmom

All tattooed up and happy
from the quality time spent together.
Just my youngest boy and I. 🙂🙃

Love Notes From My Little One

JJ came home from school with some
surprise mail for the family today. 📮

This is mine. 💌

"IT IS for..."

"IT IS for mI mummy"

He loves drawing and had started to spell phonically
so this came as a wonderful surprise for me. 😍

A bee, a flower and a sun.

This boy may look all rough and tough on the outside but he's a real sweetheart kind of cuddly marshmallow on the inside. He's always making me things and drawing me stuff. 😘 But I wasn't the only one on the receiving end today.

The Husband received a
somewhat odd looking dino, too. 🦖

Though his Ah Kong received a nicer looking one
(much to The Husband's dissatisfaction). 😅

And Ah Ma got some pretty flowers. 🌸🌸

I don't know about everyone else on his love letter list but Imma keeping mine from now till forever because I know these days don't last a lifetime. They pass in a blink of an eye and before I know it, he'll grow up and grow out of this stage. Too soon, I'll get text messages and emoticons which, you must admit, aren't quite the same as a hand-drawn picture that comes in an envelope that says:

"IT IS for mI mummy." ❤️

Spot The Hidden Terapin

Took a relaxing walk at Botanical Gardens with The Husband and the kids today. We walked and talked. Took some pictures. Then spotted a random terapin 🐢 balancing itself on some twigs and small branches while we were crossing a bridge. I saw it first. Pointed it out to the kids and JJ spotted it, too. JZ asked "where, where, where" then promptly gave up 2 seconds later. *rolls eyes*

Can you find it?

Look harder.

If reeeeeally cannot find, scroll down.
I zoom in for you.

Manggis Vs. Monkeys

Mama bought mangosteens today. And I LOOOOVE mangosteens. And langsat. And dukong. And rambutans. And also recently, durians. (But I prefer the sweet kind. 🍬 #amateur #donttellmyAhMa) Yup, I'm your local, seasonal fruit kinda gal. So when I spotted the mangosteens sitting in a bowl, I went...

Pam Song: Wah!!! So many manggis!! 🤩

JJ: Where? Where?? Where are the monkeys??? 🐒

😂😂😂

Note to Self:
Make sure the kids learn Bahasa Malaysia.
Bahasa Melayu? Bahasa Malaya!? 🤭🤷‍♀️

Antelopes Vs. Envelopes

While walking the grounds of
Disney Explorer Lodge, Hong Kong
on our first night of #HKWTS19.

Pam Song: Ethan those are antelopes. But it's too dark to see clearly now.

JJ: *innocently* Mommy can we come here again and see the envelopes?

Hahaha. Son, you crack me up!

Funny Conversations With My Sons Over Lunch

It's always funny talking to kids. Ok, fine. It can sometimes be frustrating when they're being bratty and they don't listen, too. 😅 But uuuusually, it's funny.

This is what I remember just from lunch today.

-----------------------
CONVERSATION #1
-----------------------

We're having lunch with Por Por & Kung Kung at Gurney Paragon's food court. The food arrives and JJ looks at a sunny side up egg at the food court quizzically.

JJ: Why is the egg melting?

-----------------------
CONVERSATION #2
-----------------------

While we're still at the food court, JZ notices that I'm not eating and that I'm just feeding them. (I'm fasting from 9am-6pm for 40 days with NECF.)

JZ: *kindly* You can have the soup, Mommy. I give you the soup.

Pam Song: I can’t have it, JZ. You have it.

JZ: Why? Because you’re starving?

Pam Song: 😅😅😅 Fasting, JZ. Fasting.

-----------------------
CONVERSATION #3
-----------------------

We then talk about maybe going to the Upside Down Museum after lunch. We've never been so it could be a fun experience, especially if we go with Kung Kung who's good with pictures. (Then Mommy can be in the pictures, too! 😎)

JZ: Everything is upside down??? Then how to wee wee????

😱😱😱

Pam Song & Por Por: 🤔 Haha. Good question! 😅

-----------------------
CONVERSATION #4
-----------------------

While telling melsong about some fruits Ethan ate earlier...

JJ: *interrupts excitedly* Mommy mommy mommy! There’s an animal called rambutan, you know? One animal.

Pam Song: ??? A fruit, you mean.

JJ: *very insistent* No! It’s not! Animal! It is called a rambutan!!

Pam Song: ??? 🤨 Rambutan?? No lah. There’s no such animal, JJ. 🤔

JJ: *getting frustrated with me* There issssssss...!!

Pam Song: *realisation dawns* Oh!!! 😯 Not a rambutan la, JJ. ORANGUTAN!!!! 😂😂😂

Look Outside

The kids were tired and borderline fussy on the way home from their 6-hours without us. JZ kept asking to play with our phones while JJ was whining over goodness knows what. So, in an effort to keep some measure of sanity within our car, I put the distraction method into play.

Pam Song: Look outside! What do you see??

JJ: *looks out and pulls a sien face* Nothing.

Pam Song: Nothing? Look again! Don't you see anything? What about the trees? And the sky... And the stars... What about all that?? Nothing!?

JJ: *repeats* Nothing. *sighs* The dinosaurs are sleeping.

LOL!!! Uh... okay.

Do Ants Have Teeth?

JJ has this terrible habit of wiping his dirty hands right onto the front of his shirt and touching cold fruits to his cheek. Verrrryyy disgustinngggggg. So one night after dinner, The Husband saw it and started to get on his case.

The Husband: Didi, the ants are going to bite you if you put the sweet pear on you face!!

JJ: *bo effect* 😁😁😁 *just smile only*

JZ: *nonchalantly* But ants don’t have teeth.

The Husband: 😳 Is it? *while turning to look at me*

Pam Song: *shrugs* Dunno leh.

JZ: *matter-of-fact-ly* Yes. So their teeth won’t spoil because they like to eat sweets. God made them that way.

Haha. Makes sense. Very logical, this one.
I've never thought about it before, actually.
Do ants have teeth?? 🤔 #BTC 😅😂

Dino Death

With two boys, bedtime conversations often revolve around fearsome beasts, gruesome gore and heartless killing. Sigh. #lifewithboys is really life that's devoid of all princesses, ribbons and bows lah. #mommyisoutnumbered #Ineedababygirl

JJ: I use my water gun and shoot the T-Rex die.

The Husband: Where will you shoot?

JZ: I will shoot the head and the tail.

JJ: I shoot the leg and the eye. The tail.

Pam Song: Ooo... smart.

The Husband: Why you all shoot the tail? No point wan!

JZ: *matter-of-fact-ly* Because the tail will hit us and we will fly away.

Well, I may not like the topic,
but I like their logic.

Ini Mia Bapak

While taking an evening walk
with our son in the stroller...

Pam Song: Dog coming.

The Husband: Ok.

Pam Song: *turns to The Husband and asks* Will you protect him ah if the dog attack him?

The Husband: *super defensively* What kind of stupid question is that??

Pam Song: Just answer the question! Will you protect him?? Or will you run?

The Husband: I run la!

Pam Song: HAHAHAHAHA. I knew it! Idiot.

The Husband: *2 seconds too late* Fine. I take him and run. Ok??

Taiwan, April '13: Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐), Sogo, Zhongxiao Fuxing Station

Woke up the next morning and had Chinese porridge with salted egg for breakfast. The wonderful thing about Taiwan is that their rice is just so "kiu kiu" (i.e. bouncy?) that it makes whatever dish it's used for amazing. Even plain porridge. And their salted egg? Wowza! I wish I had a picture to show you but... aiyah, none.

NOTE: You'll notice there are a lot of missing photos this trip. Either cos I can't show you the people who are in the photo, or cos I had my hands full with the baby so I couldn't take any pictures to begin with. =( Sorry. Oh yes, and cos this was a Chinese place and I'm banana, although I promise to try, I probably can't tell you where I went and what the place is called either. -_-''' #failedblogger

Anyway, back to Day 2 of our trip to Taiwan. We got the baby bundled up and off we went to catch an MRT to Zhongxiao Fuxing Station via the Brown Line.

Public transportation in Taipei is very much first-world standard, if you ask me. For instance, you always stand on the right on escalators to make way for others to walk on the left. (Just like London!) Priority seats are available for the elderly, the handicapped, pregnant women, as well as for those with babies. (Just like Singapore!) People actually get up to let you have their seat if you fall into any one of those categories, too. Oh, and you don't talk, laugh or answer calls loudly in the MRT either. So considerate la, these Taiwanese! I like!

Less intricate than the London Underground but still
waaay more effective and travel-friendly than our local
rail systems (i.e. KTM, LRT and KL Monorail).

A short ride later and... TADAAAA!

DIN. TAI. FUNG. TAIWAN, BAY-BEH!

The DTF mascot with a XLB head! Haha!

But... as is to be expected at any popular eatery during lunch hour, we had to take a number and wait. So, take a number we did! But wait, we didn't. Haha. Instead, my poor 15yo cousin-in-law, Celine, had to wait alone on our behalf while the rest of us went to check out the mall with Aunty Mee as our guide. We went merayau-rayau everywhere. Checked out the food court (my favourite item from said food court in another post, ok) and the local supermarket, too!

That grey bump you see on the right
is my son's butt in his sling. =p

Guess what. THEY SELL DURIANS!! Haha. Most surprisingly, the durians sold there did NOT smell AT ALL. In fact, we didn't even know they were selling durians until we saw the spiky mound! How come ah? Fake wan issit? Less superior than the durians we get locally? Hmmm... I wonder.

There was also a florist somewhere in Sogo so
I ended up sneaking in some more plant/flower shots.

The orchids here are really pretty. So perfect to the point that they look fake! A million times nicer than the orchids you find in Singapore, to be honest. Haha. These should have been Taiwan's national flower instead. =p

And then, we got the call. To head back to DTF for lunch? No. We wished. Instead, Celine called cos – guess what – they gave our seats away to another group!! NoooOOOoOoOOoOOOoo!!! -_-''' Said we weren't all there and couldn't order so we didn't deserve the place or something like that. Big time boo!

So, we all got our butts back to DTF ASAP and Aunty Mee tried to reason with the ladies at the reception. Thankfully, she managed to get us all in without having to wait a second round. Woo hoo! But yes, now you know. Whole group must wait there, ok? Cannot merayau-rayau. :-/

Now, for the food...

 Fried Rice with Prawns.

My portion. Check out the rice. Every grain, so "kiu kiu" and nice!

Shrimp & Pork Shao Mai.

And... urm... that's all the pics
I have of the food we ate there.

Bwahahaha.

Sorry la, guys. Not easy balancing a feeding baby, a camera and my food/chopsticks/spoon at the same time, okayyy. -_- But don't you worry. We ordered three or four varieties of the world famous Xiao Long Bao (小籠包). =D Having said that, I'm not a very big fan of XLBs. I don't very much fancy dim sum of any sort either. HAHA. So... the DTF XLB's greatness is lost on me. I did LOVE the fried rice, though. So tasty! And the rice... oh the rice! BIG TIME LOVE for Taiwanese rice.

Taiwan, April '13: The Long Way There

So you already know all the drama that happened on my way to Taiwan last week. Now, with Photoshop re-installed on my MBP, you get to see snapshots of it. =)

Finally up in the air and on our way out of KL after a long delay.

Feeding my son on the way up in an effort to protect
his eardrums. Also very kiasi hence the mask-wearing
to make sure we don't catch anything while travelling.

Got a bassinet seat but decided to do away with the
Cathay Pacific bassinet. It didn't look very sanitary. :-/

The great thing about travelling with an infant is that you get priority in queues. Don't bother lining up to board the plane, ok. Just go straight to the front of the line and shove your kid in the stewardess' face. They'll let you through. Same goes at Immigration. Just go straight to the Priority Lane. (This applies to every airport I've been to so far – even when I was pregnant – EXCEPT KLIA. -_-''' Lousy place got no Priority Lane wan. Lame-ass third-world country airport we have la, I tell you.)

Finally at Hong Kong International Airport
on one of their many super long escalators.

Anyway, we had a little extra time to waste in Hong Kong cos we missed our intended flight no thanks to the delay at KLIA so we ended up with some time to go look for food. (Food is of utmost importance whenever we travel with my FIL. =p) Went up to the food court and ate some very expensive Koay Teow Soup there. Over RM100 for four small bowls! Tsk tsk. Really ridiculous, man. -_-'''

Flight path as seen in the plane before take-off at Hong Kong.

Taipei City is 807km away. That's 807km
for me to keep my baby happy... and quiet.

Arriving at Taipei Tao-Yuan Airport.

And then, over 12 whole hours after we started
our journey, we finally touched down on Taiwan soil.

 TAIPEI, BAY-BEH!!!

Semua kiassiiiiii!!! Say 'NO' to H7N9!

Newly renovated portion of the airport! I don't know
what it was about this sight but it stopped me in my tracks.

 There's always something special about
symmetry and repeated patterns.

My baby and I are finally in Taiwan! Wheee!!!

And then the horror of missing luggage hits. -_-'''

And after all that drama, we f-i-n-a-l-l-y made it out of the airport and saw the darkening Taipei sky. Boo. We were supposed to arrive after lunch! When it was still bright and sunny! Drats. There goes one day. Sigh. Thankfully, my aunt-in-law (MIL's youngest sister) was there to meet us at the Arrival Hall. And she's a real big ball of sunshine to be around. Always have been from the first time I met her over a whole decade ago. =)

My aunt-in-law looking very, very, very happy while
carrying my son. She's the best host in all the land!

She brought us back to her home in the city and The Husband and I quickly got our son bathed and cleaned up. In her laundry basket. With no soap. (Like the rest of our luggage, his inflatable bathtub and toiletries did not arrive when we did. -_-''') I mandi-kerbau-ed after that and had no choice but to put on my 15-year-old cousin-sister-in-law's clothes. AND SO DID THE HUSBAND. BWHAHAHAHA.

While I put my son to sleep, The Husband shamelessly took some time to tour the house on his own. (The rest had gone out for dinner.) And my oh my, did he fall in love with her place. Cosy, comfortable, well ID-ed with quality fittings and finishings – he loved it! And when I had the time to check it out for myself, I could see why. It was such a nice place to call Home! I didn't take any pictures of her place but I did snap away when it came to her flowers. =p

REAL flowers leh! So pretty, right???

After that, the rest came home, The Husband and I ate a quick dinner they tapau-ed for us from a shop near by (LOVED the stir-fried cabbage!), and then promptly hit the sack after. Zzz... It was a looong day. But hey, at least we made it to Taiwan in one piece. =)

p/s: You'll notice with this series that I won't have as many pictures as I usually have because (1) I'm carrying my son so holding and camera and taking pictures becomes a real chore, and (2) most of the pictures I take include people I am expected to censor so... you don't get to see them anyways. Boo. =(
