Working On-Site

Today was KRPG's very first
full-team in-person workday since...
I dunno... Covid?! 😅

Been so long since we've worked at the office that I literally had to
wipe down this desk and do a quick clean before I could use it.

Yes, it's been a long time since. And whilst working from home is awesome, it also felt good to be back at the office today, working as a team in the actual, physical, breathing-the-same-musty-air kind of way. 😅

There’s just something about creatives gathering in one space, you know? It's more inspiring... We're more productive... There's more unity... Work just flows better and gets done quicker when we’re together, than when we're physically apart and staring at our computers, far away from each other.

Looking forward to the next one already!

Designing Brand Identity By Alina Wheeler

Eight pages in and I'm loving this book so far. 👍

I'm learning lots and it feels good to update my knowledge after being away from actively immersing myself in the advertising / marketing / branding industry for awhile. (Freelance Copywriting doesn't really make me feel like I'm a part of the creative community, if you ask me. No agency life, no kick la. 😆)

Sometimes I can't believe that I'd sidelined my career and have actually dedicated almost eight years of my life to motherhood. I guess when you're busy, you really don't have time to check the clock (or the calendar. 😆) But I must admit – while focusing on growing and nurturing my little family is fulfilling in its own way, I do miss the excitement, pace and buzz of agency life.

But jumping back into the game after so long seemed like an uphill task. I felt like the extent of my knowledge was a decade behind time. And although I think I've got a good gut for these things and am quick enough on my feet to adapt to the changes that have taken place, I still wanted the data, the methodologies and the tried-and-tested, proven-to-work processes industry experts have come up with over the years to steer and guide our community.

That's where Wheeler comes in.

And so the studying begins...

You know, I once considered taking a Masters or a second degree in Psychology. Many years back circa 2007. Or was it 2010? Hmmm. My memory fails me. #chemobrain Anyway, fast-forward to life after kids and I eventually stopped seeing myself going back to school, be it part time or full time. Just... no, thank you; I'm done. 😅

But now, I think I was looking at the whole idea of studying wrongly. You see, I still don't think I'm cut out for a life of cramming for tests and rushing assignments at this point in my life. But gaining knowledge is a lifelong process. And self improvement through lifelong learning appeals to me greatly. Also, the subject of BRANDING very much relates to my previous field of study and interest.

And that's why I'm actually happy doing this.

Notes I took from key learnings gained from
Designing Brand Identity By Alina Wheeler, Pages 1-8.

Notes From @kenny.kenray's 1st Live Interview On Instagram

Check out his IG account here!

It's been awhile since I've doodled. 😊

I used to take sermon notes this way back in the day before smartphones and online sermons. Not sure where those notebooks have gone though. 🤔 They somehow got lost in my many moves around Penang, Selangor and KL. 😢

Anyway, it felt really good to use my hands again
and go back to exercising my creative muscles. 💪

Trying Out A New Parenting Hack

One that allows me to do what needs to be done without having waste a lot of time just waiting around doing nothing before I can continue doing something. It's all about efficiency, bruh!

You see, JJ was taking FOREVER to finish his dinner tonight. And after a long day of cleaning house and doing whatever it is mothers do, ain't no mom wants to spend forever sitting around waiting for some chewing to be done.

JJ with his mouth full.

I was tired, cranky, and starting to get impatient. I just wanted to go home, take a nice, hot shower and watch me some The Big Bang Theory in front of the telly! So, I did what I had to do – get creative.

🥄🥄🥄🥄🥄

Desperate times; desperate measures.
#letsgetcreative #thinkingoutofthebox #nolimits

Only 5 spoonfuls left to tackle. 🖐 Totally manageable. Much less overwhelming than a messy plate full of food, right?? Sometimes you gotta #breakitdown to bite-sized portions for your audience, you know. Literally, in this case. LOL. Big bonus is that we got to countdown to the last spoon, too, which turned out to be a pretty fun way to bring dinner to a close.

Ah, the ideas mothers (have to) come up with
when kids take forever to finish dinner. 🙄

Motherhood Vs. Advertising

You know, I thought life in advertising was tough with its crazy deadlines, ridiculous briefs and late nights. I was wrong. Motherhood is waaaay tougher. :-/

I haven't slept more than 3 hours in a stretch since the night before my son was born. Every wail or cry for clean-up or milk demands IMMEDIATE attention. Any delay would result in more wailing and more crying until said need is met. It's exhausting to say the least. My brain is on screensaver mode half the time I'm awake, and my body is running on reserves. To be on-call morning, noon and night, day in and day out is really no laughing matter.

But... as tiring as motherhood can be,
it is also so much more rewarding
than anything advertising has to offer.

More so than the carrots bosses dangle for scams to win awards. More than the satisfaction of seeing your hard work finally going on print, on air and in press with real work, too. I once said that an artist's work – be it copy or design – is like his/her baby. Hah! I was sooooo wrong. Things are different with a REAL baby, right, Pam Song of 2011?? Woman, you so knew not what you said. *snorts*

I Love Colourful Pasta

I mean, cummon... Look at all that colour!
What's not to love about colourful pasta??

p/s: But truth be told, I like it, but I don't like it enough to cough up the dough and buy it myself. Haha. Got this free at the 9th BrandFest 2012, held in July.

OMG, 200 years of wedding fashion in ONE place?? With bridal gowns by wedding greats like Vera Wang and Vivienne Westwood?? Too cool. I super wanna go!! Argh!!! Why don't they ever hold cool exhibitions like these in Malaysia? Why? Why?! WHY??? T_T

Still Got It Goin' On... Somewhat

Was attending advertising-related conferences all week, which ultimately led to super early mornings (6:15AM alarm!) and uncharacteristic late nights for me. *groan* I'm too old for this. Really. Homework?? Assignments?? On top of all the real work I have due?? Are you freaking kidding me?! T_T

The only upside for me was that on the second day of the second conference, a final-year college-student attendee (we call him Mr Choo) whom I sat with over our hotel-buffet lunch, told me that I look young. HAHA. If only he knew... But ah, I shall remember the complement and feel better about growing old. =) Gracefully, I hope. =p

Clients From Hell

They're everywhere! LOL!

p/s: Only funny when you're watching it on YouTube or Vimeo. Not at all funny when said client is actually sitting in front of you. @_@

Freelance Woes

Had that What'sApp! conversation with Umberraerra about our friend's freelance career quite awhile ago but just rediscovered the screenshot as I was clearing out my iPhone with iPhoto. Made me laugh all over again. Haha. I miss those guys big time. They were such a huge part of my life back then. *emo*

SHOUT-OUT TO THE EX-MCKL CREW:
WE SHOULD MEET FOR LUNCH AGAIN SOON!

You know, going freelance isn't exactly the bed of roses it's made out to be. In fact, I personally think it is sometimes even more stressful than when I was working full time. Because at least with a full time position, I had working hours. And a Traffic Manager to manage the workflow. But when it comes to freelance, you've just gotta get the jobssssss done no matter what.

When I worked at the office, leaving at the end of the day meant leaving work and the stresses that come with it behind, too. But now, I find work creeping up on me whenever! When I'm doing my grocery shopping, when I'm driving in my car, when I'm at home, when I'm cooking dinner, when I'm getting ready to go to bed –  anytime! An email dings, the phone rings, and BAM! Hello, work! It's like I'm like a doctor who's on call 24/7. Sigh.

You know why freelancers who work from home often end up walking around Mid Valley at 3.30pm? Cos that's the time when we can actually start looking for food. Long after lunch hour came and went. You know why we spend hours and hours at Publika's eateries? Cos there's free WiFi for us to kill two birds with one stone – get online and work while we eat, instead of starving ourselves while we finish what we have to do.

But you know what sucks biggest time
when it comes to freelancing?

When the people around you think that you're
just shaking your legs at home doing nothing
while earning a paycheck you don't deserve.

Same as how people think housewives* do nothing but chill at home all day lah. You try and see! Wash clothes, cook meals, scrub pans, sweep floors, clean toilets PLUS take care of kids that require attention all day long. It ain't as easy as it looks to juggle all that. Housewives do blue collar work that requires lots of effort and are offered little reward for all they do. Sad but true. So, trust me, your white collar job in that fancy office with a view is a hell of a lot easier to do. >(

I'll leave you with this excerpt on Going Freelance
that I stumbled upon a long time ago. It was written
by Freelance Copywriter, Sophia Goh on her blog:

"People act as if I don’t work. This baffles me a little. If I’m not doing any work, then it’s not called working from home. It’s called not working. Just because I’m sitting at my mother-in-law’s dining table instead of an office desk doesn’t mean I’m not working. And just because I’m doing my thinking and writing in shorts doesn’t mean my ideas or my work is worth any less. My bosses obviously don’t understand this and neither do the people who act as if I spend my days watching television and getting facials.

In actual fact, I’ve been working longer hours than I probably would in the office because the lines between work and home are blurred. When I’m in the office, work is turned off when my computer is turned off. It’s a clear distinction. As I’ve discovered, it’s much harder to turn work off when I’m at home. My laptop is always there and I find myself constantly thinking about the things I need to do. It’s too easy to keep tapping away at the computer no matter the hour or the day. Which is why I’ve decided to make a conscious effort to do not an ounce of work on weekends. It takes practice, but I’ll get there."

Ok, now I need a cold drink
to cool down. Bye bye.

* Note: Housewives are totally different from stay-at-home wives who have maids to do the housework and tend to their kids, ok.

MarCom Manager Opportunity

Got this email in my Tinki Talks Inbox earlier today:

But considering how crazy things already are for me these days with work and life and work and the house, I had to give him an unfavourable reply. :-| Like so:

To which, he replied:

So... anybody interested in a MarCom Manager position at Malaysia's 2nd largest mid-tier audit firm? =D If you are, let me know. Write to tinkitalks@gmail.com and I'll do my best to hook you up. =)

Social Media Explained

Saw this LOL-worthy Instagram by Douglas Wray on Swiss Miss and laughed my butt off. Especially when I got to the last point. *grin* If you're an Internet troll-slash-addict like I am, it'll make all the sense in the world, and you'll probably be laughing your butt off, too. Haha. Anyway, I wanted my own dressed up version of the piece so I DIY-ed and now, you get this:

Hahaha. So funny yet so accurate!
My heart goes out to G+ though. =p

Bobbi Brown MakeUp Manual

My RM120 Bobbi Brown MakeUp Manual
For Everyone from Beginner to Pro.

Been eyeing this manual for a long time now. Spotted it at MidValley for the very first time a couple of months before I left MCKL (i.e. after I threw in the towel and was serving my 3-month notice period) but decided not to spend the RM120 cos... well, it was going to be bye-bye-beauty for me real soon already anyway. =(

BUT... now that I'm back in the biz... today's hardcover purchase is t-o-t-a-l-l-y justified. A real essential for me to perfect my craft* and work towards improving myself further in this area of expertise. *nods* =D

* Not the craft of putting on skincare and make-up lah – duh. I'm talking about the craft of writing about it. Ish ish ish...

Adult Supervision Required?

Am at the audio house supervising another writer at a recording with a Malaysian celebrity today. Not doing it cos I'm an ass like that but apparently, it was a special request by Big Man Boss of Words to the Production Manager that I be here for this. What since I've worked on the account with that celeb before and all.

Anyway, it's been awhile since I've been supervised, much less be supervised so I'm really trying to be nice even as I *cough* guide. But at the end of the day, this is her baby and I feel like I'm pissing all over her hard work just by being here and breathing down her neck. Overstepping creative boundaries and all that, you know? Especially since the suits ended up talking to me and not to her. Sigh.

Wait. Thinking about it now, I don't remember ever having had another writer all up in my grill while I'm at recording before. Instead, I got thrown right into the deep end to sink or swim on my own! In hindsight, I think I'd have been slightly offended if I was already on the job and later found out that the ECD made a request for another writer to sit in on my recording. Hmmm... But that's just me, I suppose. Haha. Possessive sial.
