You Can Run But You Can't Hide πŸ’¦

So, Penang is bracing for water cuts, starting tomorrow. Taiping, on the other hand, is known as the wettest town in Malaysia – rains almost every day, cloudy skies, beautiful lake gardens – it’s practically a walking waterpark. So what does Taiping Meeku do? Zoom on home today, of course! Strategic escape plan engaged. Goodbye, Penang... πŸ‘‹ Hello, Taiping!

But guess what she discovers???

 NO. WATER. IN. TAIPING.

LOLOLOLOL!

I mean... You cannot make this stuff up lah. πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

You know what they say about running from your problems, right? Sometimes, you just run straight into them. πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜… With a suitcase full of towels and a dry tap. πŸ€

My Boys Are Growing Up

It just dawned upon me that JJ will be 9 come September and JZ is turning 11 in November. 😳 How did that happen?? Where did my babies go?! Gosh. This year has really been a year of growing up for my boys.

JJ just returned from his first residential last week and spent one night away from home. I made the effort to walk him to class that morning during drop-off but he didn't even hug my goodbye before we parted ways. πŸ’” Fella just hopped into class and started playing with friends the morning I dropped him off. 😀 #melampaubetulbudakini #bochaiwa #koayhoon #nomorehugandakiss 😒

JZ, on the other hand, flew to BKK with the school team for FOBISIA for 4 days and 3 nights in early May – his first local-international-go-anywhere trip without us. ✈️ Came back safe and sound and even thoughtfully bought gifts for all of us! A pack of gummies for Didi, a fridge magnet for Mommy and a toothbrush for Papa. πŸ˜‚ He also somehow also miraculously managed to come home with more money than he left with, in spite of doing that bit of shopping for souvenirs. πŸ˜³πŸ˜… #whatsorceryisthis #moneymagic #businessminded #gotitfromhisdad

I feel like over the years, my children's independence has somehow become intertwined with mine. Or more like my independence has grown to become dependent on theirs. The more capable they are at caring for themselves, the more time I have to care for myself. Once, I was a carer; today, I am a supporter standing on the sidelines cheering them on while they spread their wings, claim their place in the world and shine all on their own.

 Yes, my role has shifted.
But I'm not complaining. πŸ˜†

I do enjoy momsing... but I also find myself genuinely looking forward to this change in pace and responsibility. I'm ready! To embrace my newfound freedom from the daily demands of parenting, to rediscover the joy of personal growth, and to find fulfilment in this next chapter of my life. It’s time to get back to hanging out with friends, exploring my interests, rediscovering my identity beyond parenthood, and investing in my well-being! (Read: Facials! Manicures! Massages! Hair spas! Hooray!)

Here's to their independence... and mine! πŸ₯‚πŸ₯³

Random Finds Along King Street & Church Street

Public payphone with coin AND prepaid card slot.

Spotted this while walking back to the car after our Tong Christmas cum Birthday Lunch @ Reve and just HAD to take a picture. My kids have never seen a payphone before! Sure, it's missing the most important thing that would indicate that it's a phone in the first place but... hey, that's what Mommy is for.

Ring ring! πŸ“ž

This foreboding staircase sat right opposite the payphone.

And diagonally across the street...

Melsong and I being touristy.

Although I'm a Penang Lang, I've never taken a picture with any of these decals before. They were only erected in recent years, after all. (I is old.) You know what... After I'm done with treatment, Imma take the kids on a stroll along the Penang Heritage Trail. How can Penangite no see and no know Penang, right??

Antelopes Vs. Envelopes

While walking the grounds of
Disney Explorer Lodge, Hong Kong
on our first night of #HKWTS19.

Pam Song: Ethan those are antelopes. But it's too dark to see clearly now.

JJ: *innocently* Mommy can we come here again and see the envelopes?

Hahaha. Son, you crack me up!

Nak Jumpa Nenek

It's JZ and JJ's great-grandfather's 98th birthday this weekend and we were to go down to Muar, Johor to celebrate it together with everybody else in that side of the family. At the guardhouse of the apartment, I rolled down the window and said what we usually say when visiting.

Pam Song: Hi! Nak jumpa nenek.

JJ: *interrupts from the backseat* Ha??? Nen nen??

What??? πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜… I couldn't believe my ears.
#NenNenKing is still nen-nen king, man. 🍼🍼🍼

6.5 months after not nen-ing and he's still got nen on the brain! I really don't know how we managed to break the addiction back on that beautiful Christmas night of 25 December 2016. If it wasn't God, I don't know what it was cos it definitely doesn't look like it was JJ who did it on his own. πŸ˜‚

Country Vs. Crunchy

The Husband and I escaped for a short #holidate to Singapore a month or two ago and visited Universal Studios Singapore at the time. We had our chance to sit on all the killer adult rides then and oo-ed and ahh-ed at all the kiddie rides we thought the kids would love. So this weekend, we decided to bring JZ and JJ for a weekend of fun in Singapore.

While driving into the city,
this conversation took place:

Pam Song: We're in Singapore now, JZ! Look around!!

JZ: Wah! Are you in a different crunchy??

Pam Song: *laughs and teases* LOL!!! Crunchy?? Did we just enter a cookie??

JZ: MOMMYYYYYYYY!!!

Haha. I love it when kids mess up
their words in ridiculous ways.

Taiwan, April '13: Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐), Sogo, Zhongxiao Fuxing Station

Woke up the next morning and had Chinese porridge with salted egg for breakfast. The wonderful thing about Taiwan is that their rice is just so "kiu kiu" (i.e. bouncy?) that it makes whatever dish it's used for amazing. Even plain porridge. And their salted egg? Wowza! I wish I had a picture to show you but... aiyah, none.

NOTE: You'll notice there are a lot of missing photos this trip. Either cos I can't show you the people who are in the photo, or cos I had my hands full with the baby so I couldn't take any pictures to begin with. =( Sorry. Oh yes, and cos this was a Chinese place and I'm banana, although I promise to try, I probably can't tell you where I went and what the place is called either. -_-''' #failedblogger

Anyway, back to Day 2 of our trip to Taiwan. We got the baby bundled up and off we went to catch an MRT to Zhongxiao Fuxing Station via the Brown Line.

Public transportation in Taipei is very much first-world standard, if you ask me. For instance, you always stand on the right on escalators to make way for others to walk on the left. (Just like London!) Priority seats are available for the elderly, the handicapped, pregnant women, as well as for those with babies. (Just like Singapore!) People actually get up to let you have their seat if you fall into any one of those categories, too. Oh, and you don't talk, laugh or answer calls loudly in the MRT either. So considerate la, these Taiwanese! I like!

Less intricate than the London Underground but still
waaay more effective and travel-friendly than our local
rail systems (i.e. KTM, LRT and KL Monorail).

A short ride later and... TADAAAA!

DIN. TAI. FUNG. TAIWAN, BAY-BEH!

The DTF mascot with a XLB head! Haha!

But... as is to be expected at any popular eatery during lunch hour, we had to take a number and wait. So, take a number we did! But wait, we didn't. Haha. Instead, my poor 15yo cousin-in-law, Celine, had to wait alone on our behalf while the rest of us went to check out the mall with Aunty Mee as our guide. We went merayau-rayau everywhere. Checked out the food court (my favourite item from said food court in another post, ok) and the local supermarket, too!

That grey bump you see on the right
is my son's butt in his sling. =p

Guess what. THEY SELL DURIANS!! Haha. Most surprisingly, the durians sold there did NOT smell AT ALL. In fact, we didn't even know they were selling durians until we saw the spiky mound! How come ah? Fake wan issit? Less superior than the durians we get locally? Hmmm... I wonder.

There was also a florist somewhere in Sogo so
I ended up sneaking in some more plant/flower shots.

The orchids here are really pretty. So perfect to the point that they look fake! A million times nicer than the orchids you find in Singapore, to be honest. Haha. These should have been Taiwan's national flower instead. =p

And then, we got the call. To head back to DTF for lunch? No. We wished. Instead, Celine called cos – guess what – they gave our seats away to another group!! NoooOOOoOoOOoOOOoo!!! -_-''' Said we weren't all there and couldn't order so we didn't deserve the place or something like that. Big time boo!

So, we all got our butts back to DTF ASAP and Aunty Mee tried to reason with the ladies at the reception. Thankfully, she managed to get us all in without having to wait a second round. Woo hoo! But yes, now you know. Whole group must wait there, ok? Cannot merayau-rayau. :-/

Now, for the food...

 Fried Rice with Prawns.

My portion. Check out the rice. Every grain, so "kiu kiu" and nice!

Shrimp & Pork Shao Mai.

And... urm... that's all the pics
I have of the food we ate there.

Bwahahaha.

Sorry la, guys. Not easy balancing a feeding baby, a camera and my food/chopsticks/spoon at the same time, okayyy. -_- But don't you worry. We ordered three or four varieties of the world famous Xiao Long Bao (ε°η± εŒ…). =D Having said that, I'm not a very big fan of XLBs. I don't very much fancy dim sum of any sort either. HAHA. So... the DTF XLB's greatness is lost on me. I did LOVE the fried rice, though. So tasty! And the rice... oh the rice! BIG TIME LOVE for Taiwanese rice.

Taiwan, April '13: The Long Way There

So you already know all the drama that happened on my way to Taiwan last week. Now, with Photoshop re-installed on my MBP, you get to see snapshots of it. =)

Finally up in the air and on our way out of KL after a long delay.

Feeding my son on the way up in an effort to protect
his eardrums. Also very kiasi hence the mask-wearing
to make sure we don't catch anything while travelling.

Got a bassinet seat but decided to do away with the
Cathay Pacific bassinet. It didn't look very sanitary. :-/

The great thing about travelling with an infant is that you get priority in queues. Don't bother lining up to board the plane, ok. Just go straight to the front of the line and shove your kid in the stewardess' face. They'll let you through. Same goes at Immigration. Just go straight to the Priority Lane. (This applies to every airport I've been to so far – even when I was pregnant – EXCEPT KLIA. -_-''' Lousy place got no Priority Lane wan. Lame-ass third-world country airport we have la, I tell you.)

Finally at Hong Kong International Airport
on one of their many super long escalators.

Anyway, we had a little extra time to waste in Hong Kong cos we missed our intended flight no thanks to the delay at KLIA so we ended up with some time to go look for food. (Food is of utmost importance whenever we travel with my FIL. =p) Went up to the food court and ate some very expensive Koay Teow Soup there. Over RM100 for four small bowls! Tsk tsk. Really ridiculous, man. -_-'''

Flight path as seen in the plane before take-off at Hong Kong.

Taipei City is 807km away. That's 807km
for me to keep my baby happy... and quiet.

Arriving at Taipei Tao-Yuan Airport.

And then, over 12 whole hours after we started
our journey, we finally touched down on Taiwan soil.

 TAIPEI, BAY-BEH!!!

Semua kiassiiiiii!!! Say 'NO' to H7N9!

Newly renovated portion of the airport! I don't know
what it was about this sight but it stopped me in my tracks.

 There's always something special about
symmetry and repeated patterns.

My baby and I are finally in Taiwan! Wheee!!!

And then the horror of missing luggage hits. -_-'''

And after all that drama, we f-i-n-a-l-l-y made it out of the airport and saw the darkening Taipei sky. Boo. We were supposed to arrive after lunch! When it was still bright and sunny! Drats. There goes one day. Sigh. Thankfully, my aunt-in-law (MIL's youngest sister) was there to meet us at the Arrival Hall. And she's a real big ball of sunshine to be around. Always have been from the first time I met her over a whole decade ago. =)

My aunt-in-law looking very, very, very happy while
carrying my son. She's the best host in all the land!

She brought us back to her home in the city and The Husband and I quickly got our son bathed and cleaned up. In her laundry basket. With no soap. (Like the rest of our luggage, his inflatable bathtub and toiletries did not arrive when we did. -_-''') I mandi-kerbau-ed after that and had no choice but to put on my 15-year-old cousin-sister-in-law's clothes. AND SO DID THE HUSBAND. BWHAHAHAHA.

While I put my son to sleep, The Husband shamelessly took some time to tour the house on his own. (The rest had gone out for dinner.) And my oh my, did he fall in love with her place. Cosy, comfortable, well ID-ed with quality fittings and finishings – he loved it! And when I had the time to check it out for myself, I could see why. It was such a nice place to call Home! I didn't take any pictures of her place but I did snap away when it came to her flowers. =p

REAL flowers leh! So pretty, right???

After that, the rest came home, The Husband and I ate a quick dinner they tapau-ed for us from a shop near by (LOVED the stir-fried cabbage!), and then promptly hit the sack after. Zzz... It was a looong day. But hey, at least we made it to Taiwan in one piece. =)

p/s: You'll notice with this series that I won't have as many pictures as I usually have because (1) I'm carrying my son so holding and camera and taking pictures becomes a real chore, and (2) most of the pictures I take include people I am expected to censor so... you don't get to see them anyways. Boo. =(

Taiwan, April '13: Murphy's Law

"Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong."

------------

So, like it always seems to be whenever I find myself traveling to a holiday destination via airplane, dear ol' Murphy just had to come along for the ride. Sigh. A simple 4.5-hour flight to Taiwan ended up taking all of 12 hours and everything that could have gone wrong, did. We were supposed to arrive in Taiwan by the afternoon, with ample time to freshen up and rest before dinner out in the town. But by the time we actually got out to the Arrival Hall, the sun had already gone down and it was already dark. =(

Flight delayed. Flight missed.
Baggages "lost" in transit.

We just had to experience them ALL lah
on my son's maiden trip abroad.

Come one, come all.
Suey suey sai lang semua. -_-

See, we decided to fly Cathay Pacific this time around cos we figured that traveling on a full service airline would be easier with an infant. Summore first time flying far far with him, right? Better just be safe rather than sorry lah. Short flights with a short transit in between better. Nanti kelam-kabut in mid air then hailat liao. @_@ But still bad move la. Maybe should have just gone with Air Asia and flown direct from KL to Taiwan.

Cos, as fate would have it, although my son travelled like a total pro and didn't make a single scene throughout our 12-hour journey from beginning to end (so proud of him for being so well-behaved!) "uneventful" would so not be the way I'd describe our trip here. :-/ Our first flight out of KLIA was delayed by over an hour so we missed our connecting flight during our transit in Hong Kong and were put on a later flight. Because of that, our baggages ended up on a different flight and did not arrive in Taiwan when we did. -_-'

And I tell you ah, although we checked in our baggages at the very. same. time. as the other members of our family who are traveling with us with three other luggages, only OUR two luggages didn't arrive. >( Super WTH, right?! Suey or not, I ask you??? Sigh. Ended up having to wear a 15-year-old relative's clothes for the night and bathing my son in a laundry basket without any soap. -_-

Thankfully, I always have a spare change of clothes for him and extra diapers in his baby bag so we could still get him out of his dirty travel clothes and into bed even without his luggage bag. Oh, and I'm also super thankful he's breast-fed so no problems with his milk either. Or else I really dunno how liao. :-/

Anyway, the trip's nice so far. Persistent wet weather is the only damper but that's only to be expected during springtime in Taiwan, I suppose. :-/ Still, I hope the rain clouds ease up and the sun decides to play nice the next few days while we're here so we can do some real sightseeing. Anyhoo, Sun Moon Lake tomorrow, followed by Alishan the day after. Woo hoo! =D

Renewed And Ready To Go!

I don't know what it was about
last week but it was just bruuutaaaaal. -_-'''

Sleep training has been tiring as hell and I'm guess it's all cos of rotten timing – a teething baby just isn't very cooperative to begin with. T_T It's difficult times like these that I miss blogging on Tinki Talks more. Wish I had more time on my hands to rant and rave about my situation but even that is hard to come by nowadays. Sigh. Oh well, for those of you who still bother dropping by, here's a simple cheater-blog-filler post for you to remember me by. Haha.

New pic on the left, old pic on the right.

Forgive my vanity but, in spite of everything,
I think motherhood looks good on me. HAHA.

p/s: I can't wait for April to roll by cos that's when we're bringing our son on his maiden trip abroad!! Wheee! I'm a mad mix of anxious and excited at the moment!

p/s/s: Too many exclamation marks in a p.s.!!! =D

Just Another Day In Malaysia

Spent the better part of the day at the immigration office in Plaza Glomac, Kelana Jaya. Got my passport renewed and made the little one his first. I'd already taken his passport photo at a studio yesterday (my baby's first studio shot!! =p) but decided to have mine taken on the spot at Immigration so I don't risk getting my picture rejected. (Heard they're more understanding with baby photos.)

My most recent passport photo, minus the one
I used to apply my passport with.

RM10 for 6 photos plus free photocopying of necessary documents. Not bad, huh? So much more worth it than that lousy (and lansi) photo studio I went to at SS15 that charged me RM15. >(

But I digress.

So I drove to Plaza Glomac, walked toward the immigration office, had my photo taken and documents photocopied just outside its doors, stepped inside, walked up to the first counter I see with an immigration officer, and asked:

Pam Song: Encik, boleh bagi saya borang ka?

Immigration Officer: S'karang takde borang punye le cik...

Pam Song: ???

Immigration Officer: Paperless!

Pam Song: @_@ Wah! High-tech!

After two seconds pause...

Pam Song: Urm... So sekarang ambik nombor then sudah boleh buat ka?

Immigration Officer: S'karang tak boleh le cik...

Pam Song: ???

Immigration Officer: System offline!

Pam Song: -_- Apalah. Cacat...

Lousy. I tell you, Malaysia really boleh lah.

Time needed to make/renew passport in Malaysia – 1 hour.
Time spent waiting at the immigration office – 5 hours. -_-'

Belated Wishes, Stories And Tales

Happy Chinese New Year, guys! I know I'm late (as seems to be the case on Tinki Talks ever since my son made his appearance :-/) cos it's Chor 6 already but... seriously; who cares?? CNY lasts 15 days after all. Ahh, such mercy the Chinese have on new mothers who blog. HARHAR. =p

And Valentine's Day?

Urm... whazzat?? -_-'''

Anyway, I hope you guys have been having a good time with family, friends and loved ones, near and far. As for me? It was a busy week of packing and unpacking for travels and visitations with a 12-week-old, with lots of money going out and a wee bit coming in. (BIG TIME YAY FOR THE LATTER!! Woo hoo! =D =D =D)

Thankfully, right now, at this very moment, I'm finally back in my home in KL; The Husband's lounging on the sofa with his iPad barely 6 feet from where I'm sitting; the baby's sound asleep in our bedroom after his 'goodnight' feed; I have my MBP up and running again after being in hibernation for over a week... and I can honestly say that I... am happy. =)

If this is life for me from this day forth, I really have no complaints. But as can only be expected with a new baby, it's not always this serene, this peaceful or this quiet. Haha. Having said that, I'm looking forward to settling down in KL once again and getting my life back in order, with the baby in tow. Hopefully once that happens, you'll see me here again more often. =) Till then, XOXO! Mwah!

Bangkok, September '12: A Morning At Chatuchak Weekend Market

Woke up early the next morning and got ready to start shopping Bangkok dry. I took my bath first (because I'm a girl and girls always take longer to get ready so we always get to use the bathroom first) while The Husband made us our morning drinks – coffee for him, tea for me.

Cute little electric kettle.

After that, we were off!

Took a cab from the hotel and went straight to Chatuchak. Surprisingly, the drive there only cost us 100 Baht. @_@ In KL, cabbing that same distance would have cost us a bomb!

Crazy, messed up telephone wires.

We arrived at our destination in a little over a half hour;
just a minute before 11AM, Malaysian time.

Chatuchak (more fondly known to the locals as JJ Market) is one of those places my friends have always gushed about. Ah Beng used to spend all his shopping money buying stuff here. Haha. Thing is, although I've been to Bangkok before, I've never ever been to Chatuchak. (Blasphemy? =p) We ran out of time during that last trip. Haha. But hey, at least I made it this time!

Store guide.

Chatuchak seems to sell EVERYTHING under the sun.
Don't believe me? Take a look for yourself!

Zoomed in on the specifics for you.

E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. From clothing and accessories, to food, vegetables and fruits, to books, paintings, and garden equipments, to pets and even  fighting cock shows. @_@ Crazy. Bangkok really knows how to do markets like nobody else does. Haha. I think we were a little early though. Only 9AM BKK time so I guess that's why the market wasn't totally busy-busy yet.

Outdoor section.

Indoor section.

Do you see what I see???

OMG, so colourful and pretty, right??? I would totally have bought a pack to snack on while shopping if I was there with friends. But this group I'm with are a little more... urm... health-conscious. So we ended up with fresh orange juice instead. Haha.

It was not even half as good as the pomegranate juice or orange/lime juice we had the night before at China Town. It had a bitter aftertaste I didn't quite like.

Another map at a police booth that tells you why Chatuchak
is called JJ Market by the locals. They call it Jatujak! =)

Soon after, it was decided that it was time for lunch. So we stopped to eat at one of the outdoor eating areas, set up under tents. OMG, it was almost noon and the weather was just so freaking hot! It was like an oven under there. -_-'''

Yup. Surprise surprise, I ordered the fried rice. Again.
Mixed this time; not tomyam. Learned my lesson. Haha.

Not great. Too wet and not very tasty.

No wonder it could arrive in front of me
just FOUR minutes after I ordered. :-/

Lunch was over almost as quickly, too. 15 minutes, kau tim. Stuffed our faces as fast as we could to get out of the heat and back into the cool indoor market area. Haha. On the way in, I couldn't resist stopping at an ice-pop stall to get a cool ice-pop on a stick.

I picked the Coke-flavoured one.

Red-faced from the supreme Bangkok heat and
looking forward to my first taste of that ice-pop.

Too bad I had to throw more than half away. The Husband refused to let me finish it in spite of the fact that I was melting from the heat! "Dirty water," he said. BOO HOO... T_T

Smiling in spite of the heat. Super hot weather outside.

After that, we went back to doing some shopping. But somehow ended up at the kitchenware, household and living department. -_-''' What a waste of precious shopping time! Not like we were going to buy any pots and pans or fake flowers to bring home also. Haiya. That's what happens when a market is too big and you don't have a hand-held map to navigate your way from stall to stall.

Colourful dangly things in the household section.

Thank goodness we got ourselves out of that cutlery/kitchenware/fake-flower maze and went back to the clothing section after that. If there's one stall I'd like to go back to the next time I find myself at JJ Market, it'd be THE CORNER:

It sells lots of pretty, embroidered and appliquΓ©d ladies tops for just 200 Baht each. There were some nice English-styled lace dresses there, too. But the dresses cannot buy la. Too ex already. All over 1,000 Baht. Some even more than 2,000 Baht. (Ouch.) But the tops were affordable so I just hovered over that table and ignored the other stuff. HAHA.

Bought another bottle of juice to share (guava this time – also so-so only) after that, it was bye-bye JJ Market and hello, taxi ride and Bangkok jam again.

Typical Thai ad seen on the way out.

So what did I buy at JJ Market?

Black sleeveless top with appliquΓ© and sequins
that cost 200 Baht. (Mama's gift to her daughters-in-law.
I got one, my SIL got one. Haha. Fair-fair.)

Close up of the appliquΓ© and sequins.

A hippo t-shirt for myself – thought it was cute.

Thai Elephant tees for The Husband's nephew and niece.

A super cheap, super comfy dress that only cost me 100 Baht.

Hair clips. They were 6 for 100 Baht.

And that's it! I'd totally go back to JJ Market again if ever I'm in Bangkok. Think it'll be my stop of choice, followed by Platinum Mall. (More on Platinum Mall in a later post.) It's cheap, it's big, it's not quite as hot and uncomfortable as people say it is (although not at all cool and luxurious either) and, like I said and will say again, it's cheap. Cheap wins. =p JJ Market, I will be back!
