That last look on your face – the one I saw just before I closed the door that 7am? It held so much sadness that I'm haunted by the sight. Till today, it haunts me. It really does. I see it in the quiet of night when I close my eyes. In the dark when I go to bed. And even in my dreams when I sleep. I see your tired eyes blink slowly as you stand rooted in the narrow light of my doorway. Watching me, waiting for my call. The call that didn't come. Then, you watch as I close the door and leave you standing there in the shadows.

I know you're gone now. And I guess I'll get over that someday. But the one thing that really pains me is this: I wish I gave you more than just a light pat on the head, on my way into the room that early morning when it was only you and me, awake and outside at dawn. Maybe a hug, a kiss, or a gentle stroke at least. But we both know I didn't. And I'm so very sorry for that. I'm sorry I didn't take the time to show you how very much you really meant to me before it was too late. Now, you'll never know. And now, there's nothing I can do to change any of that.
