It was a line that Ah Beng (been awhile since you heard that name, eh? =p) and I used to say to each other. And it usually followed the I-just-met-a-jerk stories we'd tell each other late into the night during our partnering days back at MCKL, about the two-legged, bird-brained cows we had the ill fate of crossing paths with. (Trust me, you'd be surprised how many of them walk among us.)

To be honest with you, "Nan Ren Mei You Hao Dong Xi" was just a line to me. Most of the time, at least. Just something Ah Beng and I laughed over. Well, I don't see much of Ah Beng these days. So naturally, I don't say the line very much anymore. But every once in awhile, I am reminded of its truth. Of the fact that the line sometimes still does apply. And that some Nan Ren really Mei You Hao Dong Xi.

"Admirer"

I show up at work and started the day with an internal with Tiam Tiam. In the midst of it, he stops short, looks me in the eye and says in all seriousness, "Pam ah, now only I know you got admirer." Confused at his sudden change of topic, I go, "Huh??!" And then pulls out his iPhone and shows me this picture:

Wth??? Haha.

I was just sharing with The Fiancé last night over dinner about some dude who offered me a 2ct. diamond ring – he saw the ring I was wearing – if I'd just ditch The Fiancé and start dating him instead. True story. To which, this conversation ensued...

The Fiancé: Some guys think they can get girls with their money.

Pam Song: Well, those guys with money can only get some girls.

Truth. Cos, I hate to break it to you but those 'some girls', are the same girls who'd just like those men for their bank accounts. Sounds totally shallow, right?? But totally MFEO if you really think about it. Haha. Cos one just loves the material; the other just loves the physical. Nobody's in it for the personality behind the money or the face. Oh, well. To each his own I guess.

The only thing is don't get is this:

Why would a guy possibly want a girl

who'd love him just for his money?!

And why would a guy want a girl

who's good for nothing other than her looks??

Beauty and body are depreciating assets. Throwing money into that is much like putting money into a car – its value will reduce over time. So what if she's hot now? I guarantee you she won't be hot forever. She will grow old, her skin will sag, and wrinkles will appear. It's unavoidable. Time has the last say and no amount of eye cream or bird's nest is going to ever change that.


But personality and character, on the other hand, will mature and continue to develop as the days go by. So isn't it wiser to invest your efforts into winning over a respectable woman with the right priorities and a good head on her shoulders instead? It is akin to choosing solid bonds and shares that hold the promise of growing in worth and bringing in good harvest in the future!

I don't know about you
but the smarter choice seems
pretty obvious to me.

Oh oh! But the ironic thing

about these shallow folks is this:

When you really think about it, a woman who picks a rich man only for his money... is actually wiser than the fool who falls for a hot woman only for her looks. Why? Cos at least she's smart enough to invest her time in an appreciating asset while he is investing in a depreciating one. Hahaha.

Facebook – An Upgrade From Friendster

While the days of "Harlow, may I Friendster you?" seem to have blown over – thank goodness for that, by the way *rolls eyes* – the days of Facebook dating seem to reveal an upgrade in quality of opening lines and self-introductions. Check out this latest one I received:

I woke up feeling a little under the weather today. Must have been that Supreme Shredded Chicken Curry Baked with Swiss Cheese Rice from Kim Gary I shoved down my throat in a hurry last night. :-/ But no problem. At least not with Ubat Akar-Akar Teh Sejuk Cap Tan Ngan Lo!

Made me a hot cuppa first thing this morning and already, I feel lots better. The soreness in my throat's eased up some and I don't feel quite as heaty anymore.

I can't believe that it's officially one day past mid-month today. WHERE DID THE YEAR GO??? Gosh, I remember stepping into 2010 thinking, "Whoa... Another year of LDR? Like, seriously? Again!?" But guess what? That year's drawing to an end now and in less than 24 hours, The Fiancé and I will be saying 'hello' to each other... and 'goodbye' to LDR – forever! =D


Can you believe that?? After almost a decade of long-distance dating, we're finally going to get our turn at same-space together time. Haha. Feels surreal, actually. But no more emotionless text messages, no more disconnected chats, no more hear-no-see Skype calls, and no more see-no-touch webcamming? Gee, I'll say 'Yes' to that! Haha. Wheee... I can't wait!

BACKGROUND STORY: Jun-Jun, Hiyashi and I decided to tapau Subway back for the peeps at KRPG yesterday's lunch and... I think we successfully pissed a good number of people off while we were there. @_@ *gulp*

You see, we had a whole laundry list of personalised orders – various types, with different fillings, breads and sauces. At the end of what seemed like forever, we walked away with a total of FIFTEEN different 6" Subs. Haha. Yep, it was a loooong wait. With lots of pissed off people behind us. =p

Anyway, if you were one of them at Subway, Gurney Tower, sorry lah. Our friends who're busy working have gotta eat also. Haha. Actually hor, I'd blame the servers for taking so long to get our orders out. Yeah. Blame them. Thank you for your kind cooperation and understanding. =p

Eh, if anything Subway paid us back in kind for making you wait okay. Turns out it was NO PAPER BAG DAY! *slaps forehead* FIFTEEN 6" Subs and no paper bag to take 'em all back with?? *faints*

Anybody Want A Bit Of Blah? I've Got Some To Spare.

My favourite time of any regular work day used to be lunch hour. Sure, we'd bicker, moan and groan about having to decide on where to go every. single. time. (In hindsight, I don't understand why it used to be so difficult. We always go back to the same old places anyways -_-) But after settling the matter – whether by vote or veto – we'd always enjoy that hour-long time out with one another between work and more work. It was something to look forward to, no matter how dull the day.


A close second favourite time of day would be that midnight moment between Sanity and Madness. That tipping point when Thinking and Logical Reasoning decide to elope, then run amok on you without warning before self-combusting into a firework display of Crazy meets Crackers. The extra lame jokes, the ridiculously loud (and sometimes off-key) singing, the overdose of Iced Milo – omg, the Iced Milo – WITH ICE! *melts* I loved, loved, loved it!


It's different now though. You see, I started thinking a lot about how I felt about work after going down to KL for the 2010 Kancil Awards last month. And I realised that... I don't have that "favourite time of any regular work day" anymore. It's not lunch hour, and it's definitely not any midnight anything either cos... well, we don't work those kinds of hours here. (Thank God!) But... that doesn't mean I shouldn't have a favourite time of day when I'm at work, right??


Very often, when I look back at my days now, I find it difficult picking out the high points. There are few things I'd remember enough to share with anyone else at the end of the day, or just have to blog about before I forget. Peaks in happiness or excitement are few and far in between. More often than not, everything's just... blah. And blah's bad. Cos it makes me feel even more blah knowing I've had nothing but blah all day. =(


Personally, I don't get it. I don't get me. I mean, it's not like there's not enough work to keep me busy. And it's not like our deadlines are so comfy-cushiony that I don't sometimes feel like a headless chicken. But then again, it's not like there's soooo much work that there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to finish everything even if I don't sleep either lah. So technically, I should have enough ups and downs in my day to offer me a variety of moments I could enjoy. Keyword 1: Should; Keyword 2: Could. Heck, to be honest with you, I don't even feel excited to leave the office at the end of the day. -_-

So tell me, what does this mean?

Rapunzel (a.k.a. Tangled)

I just watched the 3D version of Rapunzel (a.k.a. Tangled) in Penang's latest, newest, konon-nya most high tech cinema – W Cinemax. (It's actually the old Smile Cineplex at Island Plaza.) 3 screens only. HAHA. And ticket prices are slightly more expensive. But I think I'll go ahead and make it my 3D movie haunt from now on. Why? Cos I hate fighting for tickets. So, IMHO, the price difference is worth the lack of crowds and the abundance of personal space. =p

Anyway, The (Ex)Owner texted me some two weeks ago, telling me that he just watched Rapunzel and that I should go catch it cos, "It's as good as How To Train Your Dragon." (I think they're both nice to watch and impressive in different ways.) Also, "Her character reminds me of you," he added. "Dreamy, brave, lovable," apparently. Haha. Looks like Disney rubbed off on him some. Funny thing is, after watching, Jun-Jun concurs. *doubtful* I don't know if they're on to something there and if it's a good or a bad thing but... The (Ex)Owner was definitely right about one thing – it was good and I loved it!

I'm Not Addicted. He Is.

So you know that I just recently started watching The Vampire Diaries. But The Fiancé? He's been on it since like, f-o-r-e-v-e-r-r-r. In fact, he tried to get me to watch it while I was still in Australia. Haha. But at the time, I was just too busy catching up with Gossip Girl and watching Man Vs. Wild and Top Gear UK to offer these vamps the time of day. (Plus, Twilight kinda ruined it for me. Made me think very poorly of vamp dramas. :-/)

I know I've been a little late jumping on the bandwagon but... don't you worry. I'm fast. Very fast. It's just been 2 days and already, I'm at Episode 12 of Season 1. Gosh, I've made it more than halfway through the whole season, guys! Haha. From the way things are going, it'll just be a matter of time – days, if you wanna be precise about it – till my stash runs out (I've only got Season 1 – boo hoo) and I start going on the prowl for more delicious vamp drama.

Nutty Muruku Mishap

Why?? Cos she eats nuts!! =D

You see, I started on a new pack of Mixed Muruku and offered Soya Legs some. Instead of grabbing a handful, she started picking out nuts and telling me how much she looooved them. @_@ So... I reached for my box of leftover nuts and offered them to her. Guess what? SHE TOOK IT! And happily, too! But perhaps I should start rethinking her nickname and maybe give her an updated one. Cos... Miss Soya Legs also happens to be Miss Butter Fingers!

She dropped the whole box of nuts I gave her!!

I tell you, we had leaves scattered e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e and nuts rolling in e-v-e-r-y direction in the Studio. Even around our chairs and under our tables. -_-'''

Haiyo. Really beh tahan this girl, man. But... it was her loss lah. Haha. Cos there went her mid-afternoon snack of precious nuts she loved so much. =p Oh, and since she messed up the floor, she automatically got downgraded from PA to being a Kakak for the moment to clean it all up. Haha.

Muruku Mania

The lot of us at KRPG have been on a muruku binge since a fortnight ago. Star muruku, mixed muruku, circle muruku, spiky muruku – you name it, we've had it. In fact, I've been eating so much muruku all day, all week that I'm surprised my poop hasn't begun to smell of Indian spices. @_@ (TMI? Sorry. It's the stress. :-/)


Thanks to this Karaoke Queen lah. Get us hooked and addicted to this kind of dadah then just up and leave us to deal with our addictions on our own. Rawr! (Kidding la. Karaoke Queen, you know I lup you long time, right? =p)

You know, after years and years of long distance relationship-ing, I'm really looking forward to having a real relationship. With a real person. And not my phone. Or comp. Someone I can see, touch and smell. And spend time with. Without logging in, charging up, plugging in, subscribing to a network, or connecting to the Internet. Finally. After all this time. Finally, I can say...

The KRPG Tree

So you already know what happened during put-up-the-Christmas-tree hour at KRPG. But here's what happened to the tree after the other elves went back to work. Like, work work, by the way. Not Santa's elves' work. Harhar. Wait. Did I even have to explain that? Maybe not. Hmmm.

But that was last week. Earlier this week, I got Mixed Pine some white baubles to complete her look. (Yes, I realise I'm taking quite a long while to dress her.) But I've been a little off course with blogging these couple of weeks so... no pictures of that. Yet. :-/

Deck The Halls With Boughs Of Holly!

Christmas isn't Christmas without a Christmas tree,

Christmas presents, and lots of Christmas deco.

Unfortunately for us in Penang, Christmas came late. Seriously, man... I dunno what's wrong with the malls here. They only recently started putting up Christmas deco, selling Christmas ornaments and playing Christmas songs. Shame on them for not getting into the mood earlier. I believe it was the severe lack of baubles, ribbons and glitter this year that greatly dimmed the hype of Christmas for the rest of us, too. Tsk tsk. The bah-humbug-ness of it all. *grunt*


ANYWAY... I made a one night escape to KL last weekend to attend the 2010 Kancil Awards and somehow managed to sneak in some super-speedy Christmas shopping in between at IKANO, Mutiara Damansara and Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang. Well, guess what?? I got KRPG a new tree! Mixed pine, yo!

 

So so ver-eh class-eh, bay-beh! I like!

I put it up last week together with some of my colleagues and... it turned out to be a total riot! Haha. Like the circus came to town or something. Case in point:

Anyway, the setting-up process was simple enough

What (or whom) did you let go of this year? Why?

I think the most significant thing I let go of this year was... *drumroll, please?* ...my life in KL. It wasn't an easy decision to say the least. And I still miss it on most days if not all. But that's that and I'm okay with it. For the most part. Heh.

But gosh, if I'm honest,

this is what I'd say:

I really miss the life I had in KL. I miss my room at Damansara Perdana. I miss my matching 5-piece furniture set that always moved with me. I miss my big-enough wardrobe and queen-sized bed. I miss grocery shopping at Jaya Grocer. I miss the kitchen where I cooked. I miss the water pressure there. I miss flooding the apartment every other month. I miss Little One. I miss sitcom nights. I miss late-night suppers. I miss spontaneous late-night suppers. I miss having supper, period. I miss my sizzling plate tofu at Lucky Seafood, Seapark. I miss SS2 porridge. I miss SS15 baby crabs. I miss KFC dinners at Jalan Universiti. I miss Friday lunches at Kanna Curry House. I miss MCKL's coffee machine. I miss the crazy agency life down there. I miss the buzz that came with it. I miss 4-lane highways. I miss the simple understanding that the right lane is always the fast lane. I miss bike-free roads. I miss CHCKL. I miss my friends – ex-housemates, ex-colleagues, ex-college mates, etc... and that's just the half of it. @_@

But I let all that go this year.

Why? Cos it was time.

For the fact that I managed to find wonder in every wonderful experience this year, I have Dee to thank. I know I've said this before but... I'll say it again since we're on the topic and since IT'S SO FRIGGIN' TRUE/GOOD/AWESOME THAT E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IT AND APPLY IT TO THEIR LIVES, TOO! =D

Here's the secret to cultivating

(and maintaining) a sense of wonder in life:

Don't. Keep. Expecting. Fireworks.

It worked for me. You know, I could (and would) have been disappointed with so many things this past year if I had pre-conceived expectations of the things, the happenings, and the people around me. But because I didn't, I ended up walking away with more than enough pleasant surprises to help me look back at 2010 and remember that there's always reason to smile because of the unexpected. =)

Hmmm. *thinking* For me, I think it'd be this one moment when I was in Australia earlier this year. The day I was to fly back, actually. I remember it being a Sunday. The Fiancé and I were at church that morning. We saw fire-red trees on our way there. And on our way back, we picked his younger brother up from college and headed off to Fremantle for some yummy Italian food.

The restaurant was jammed packed so we ended up having to sit outside – me, under the shade of the not-very-shady umbrella, The Fiancé's younger brother, sitting right opposite me, got a half tan over lunch, while The Fiancé, seated on my right, sacrificially opted for a full back burn. So what if you guys get to pee standing? It still pays to be a girl. Girls get to sit in the shade. =p

Anyway... we placed our orders,

and soon enough, food came.

It was good. But wait!

That one moment hadn't arrived yet. =)

You see, after lunch, we sat and talked for a bit while sipping on bubbly, translucent orange LLBs. I remember feeling very relaxed, sitting, chilling and laughing at whatever it was we were talking about when suddenly, The Fiancé grabbed me, pulled me toward him and covered my head with both his hands.

With my head still in his hands and my face stuffed up to his chest (or under his armpit – I can't remember haha), I asked, "What?? WHAT??!" And he coolly said, "Wait. Don't move... There's a seagull behind you." @_@

On any normal bird-o-phobic day, I'd be panicked, freaked out, and in fight-or-flight mode. But at that moment, I somehow thought nothing of it. I also found myself smiling into his long-sleeved t-shirt – the very one I washed the day before and still smelt like fresh laundry. I don't know how it happened but at that moment, I felt... loved, safe and protected.

The moment passed when the seagull flew away... but the memory stayed with me long after. I don't think he even knows how that instinctive gesture to cover me made me feel. And I never talked about it either. But... yeah. That was my moment this year. =)

December 2 – Writing.

What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing – and can you eliminate it?

If you didn't already know by now, I write for a living – to earn a meagre sum, to survive on, to spend with, to give back to the folks, and to save enough to pay off the 10 million things the wedding requires of my rapidly shrinking bank account.

I'm usually required to take on different personalities – depending on the client I'm writing for – and speak on their behalf. And I'm expected to sound just like them! -_-''' Because of that, I can honestly tell you that I don't necessarily lurrrve writing what I'm paid to write all the time.

Some industries bore me to death. *dies* While some others just make me feel like a total bimbo through and through. *blows nails, flip hair* Sometimes I play the wide-eyed, outspoken teen. Sometimes, I'm the wannabe diva who's just not quite there yet. At other times, I'm a glamorous tai tai. I've even played the pompous male chauvinist. Sounds like fun role-playing. But it isn't always.

Plus, over the years, I've also had the honour of encountering clients who are so super skilled in sucking every ounce of grey matter from my brain over Client-Agency meetings that just sitting in their presence drains me of all intelligence. -_-''' (Makes make me wonder how I managed to qualify to join the International High IQ Society after all that Client-Agency time I clocked in. *snorts*)

But that's what it's like writing on someone else's behalf. It ain't a bed of roses all the time. But I manage. I deal. I take a deep breath, put on some good music, go game face (that means putting on my stupid-bored-bimbo writer's mask)... and then I start typing. (I am so not a pen and paper girl. Haha.)

But that's work.

It's different with blogging. =)

Most things contribute to my writing here at Tinki Talks. Food, work, events, conversations, friends, family, love – just all of life in general, really. No elimination necessary. And I wouldn't have it any other way. =)

December 1 – One Word

Gee, it looks like my recent hiatus from blog-world has cost me 4 days off the #reverb10 timeline. Haha. Boo... Bad blogger. =p Ohbutcummonnnnn... better late than never, right? =)

So what's #reverb10?

Well, it's an annual, open-to-all, month-long, always-in-December online initiative that encourages its participants to reflect on the year and manifest what's next with the help of prompts. So... yeah. That's what I'm going to be doing (or at least what I'm going to try to do considering the hectic work schedule that's teasing/testing/taunting/haunting me at the moment -_-''') from now till the 31st of December. I hope I don't potong stim and hilang semangat halfway through. Haha. I also hope to learn more about myself and my dreams for the future through doing this.

My word for 2010 is CHANGE.

It's been a year of many changes for me. So many that I don't even know where to begin talking about them all. Haha. But don't worry. I'll try. =) Let see...

I quit my job in KL, then started a new one in Penang after a much-needed 3.5-month break, much of which was spent in Australia. Leaving KL was difficult. And I'm still re-familiarising myself to Penang and its quirks. But I'm sure that in time, I'll settle. Things will only get better. =)

Because of my relocation, I stopped renting rooms and living with strangers-turned-housemates-turned-friends. Instead, I've gone back to living with family. And the family pet. But my moving process isn't yet complete. And won't be for awhile. For I've also been tasked to pick furniture for The Fiancé and I with my future in-laws for our future home.

And since we're talking fiancés, in-laws and new homes, I started the year with a status change. I went from Single to In A Relationship on the first day of the new year. 6 months later, I accepted a proposal. And now, I'm planning a wedding with the man I'm about to commit the rest of my days to.

Work-wise, I'm doing something I used to hate... but now, I think I'm starting to prefer it to what I liked. =) I still do miss my old colleagues at MCKL – Duh Roads, Lamé, Tim Tams, The Senior Writer, etc. But... the peeps are KRPG are pretty swell, too. They just speak more Hokkien. =p

As you can see, there have been

MANY significant changes for me this year.

For a number of those changes, I'm still adjusting. In mind, as well as in the physical. Some changes haven't fully metamorphosed yet so change will undoubtedly continue come 2011 and I'll still be adjusting then. But I'm thankful that they've all been good changes – healthy changes. Even so, constant change needs to progress into stability sometime. So... the word that I hope eloquently captures 2011 for me is STABILITY. =)

December

Can you believe that we're already 4 days into the last month of the year??? 21 days till Christmas, and just 27 days till a brand new year altogether. Gosh! When did Time start flying at such hyperspeed?! Funny thing is... I'm not quite ready to say 'goodbye' to 2010; but... I can't wait for 2011 to arrive either! Haha. 2010's been a year of many changes. But I'll leave stories of that for another post. One that gives 2010 the glory it deserves. Wait for it!

I got a call earlier today.

Lady from Bella: Hi Miss. You got appointment wif us at 6.30PM dis Saturday ya.

Pam Song: Oh, issit?? Hmmm... Actually hor... this Saturday I not free wor. Can change day ah?

Lady from Bella: Oh. Liddat ah... Can. What day you wan?

Pam Song: Tomorrow evening can ah? 6:30PM.

*long pause*

Lady from Bella: I tot you say you cannot.

Pam Song: No, I said Saturday cannot. That's why I want to change to tomorrow. Can?

*long pause*

Lady from Bella: But... Miss ah... tomorrow is Saturday!

*long pause*

Pam Song: @_@ No, it's not!!! It's Friday!

Lady from Bella: Har?? No leh, Saturday!

Pam Song: Wait. *checks with colleagues* Oh, shucks, it's Saturday?!! WHAT DID YOU DO TO FRIDAY!?? @_@

So yes... because of the very eventful unhappening week (oxymoron much?) I've had, things are a little loop-d-loop in my head right now. Don't worry, though. I've still been writing. Only nothing's online. Yet. :-/ I've decided to schedule some of the posts for later – the few that I'm comfortable publishing. Maybe you'll see them when I'm off on holiday and am unable to blog or something lah. Anyway...

Karaoke Queen Pushes The Stop Button

Last Thursday was Karaoke Queen's last day at work. But since the day was booked way in advance by The Boss and his missus, the staff got Wednesday instead. So... last Wednesday, the lot of us brought her out for her farewell lunch at a not-so-good restaurant in town with less-than-impressive food that I can't seem to remember where. :-/

Dunno where also no loss. =p

And since the food was disappointing, I shall refrain from tainting the sanctity of Tinki Talks with pictures of this restaurant's menu and/or dishes.
