Catching Some Zs

Why do people say that a person who's sleeping is one who is "catching some Zs"? When in fact, that person is probably in bed cos he/she is so tired, he/she can't be bothered to do anything else, much less catch random letters in the alphabet.

LOL! That is really random and you have a point. Now it makes me wonder what's the reason behind that phrase? Perhaps the person who invented that sleeps and snores in a way that it sounded lk he/she was saying zzzzzz

i used that in my essay when i was in form three. my teacher circled the phrase and wrote a question mark, hahaha. catch some Zs usually refer to the letter 'Z' used in cartoons when they snore or sleep. figuratively speaking, catch some Zs means catch some sleep :D but anyway your explanation is easier to understand LOL

– Haha. Yeah, I realise that. But I guess I'm not questioning the Zs. More about the action word "catching". Haha.
