A Wife At Five & A Girl Worth Fighting For

Someone The Husband and I knew had just gotten married and well, his brand new wife sure looked urm... nice... during their wedding. *cough* Not. *cough* 😬

That night, I felt led to urge The Husband to pray for our sons and their future wives – our future daughters-in-law – during our nightly, bedtime prayer. As a mother, it’s my deepest hope and greatest desire that JZ and JJ choose wisely, so our family grows with people we genuinely enjoy having around for forever, and not just out of obligation because of some legal paper.

The next day, as I was driving JZ to school,  the topic somehow came up again while we were listening to the soundtrack of Disney's Mulan. The lyrics of the song "A Girl Worth Fighting For" hit me in an unexpected way...

Artist: Various Artists
Title: A Girl Worth Fighting For

[Army]
For a long time we've been
Marching off to battle

[Yao]
In our thundering herd
We feel a lot like cattle

[Army]
Like the pounding beat
Our aching feet aren't
Easy to ignore

[Ling]
Hey, think of instead
A girl worth fighting for

[Mulan]
Huh?

[Ling]
That's what I said:
A girl worth fighting for
I want her paler than the
Moon with eyes that
Shine like stars

[Yao]
My girl will marvel at my strength
Adore my battle scars

[Chien Po]
I couldn't care less what she'll wear
Or what she looks like
It all depends on what she cooks like
Beef, pork, chicken
Mmm

[Yao]
Bet the local girls thought
You were quite the charmer

[Ling]
And I'll bet the ladies love
A man in armor

[Army]
You can guess what we
Have missed the most
Since we went off to war

[Ling]
What do we want?

[Army]
A girl worth fighting for

[Yao]
My girl will think I have no faults

[Chien Po]
That I'm a major find

[Mulan]
Uh, how 'bout a girl who's got a brain
Who always speaks her mind?

[Yao, Ling, and Chien Po]
Nah!

[Ling]
My manly ways and turn of
Phrase are sure to thrill her

[Yao]
He thinks he's such a lady killer

[Chi Fu]
I've a girl back home who's
Unlike any other

[Yao]
Yeah, the only girl who'd
Love him is his mother

[Army]
But when we come home
In victory they'll line up
At the door

[Ling]
What do we want?

[Army]
A girl worth fighting for

[Ling]
Wish that I had

[All]
A girl worth fighting for
A girl worth fighting...

"A girl worth fighting for" – this made me think, you know. Not everyone prioritises the same things. But in the heat of youth and the whirlwind of romance, it’s easy to get swept up in the thrill of winning someone’s affection – especially if that someone is popular or is what the world considers "a good catch".

But what is a good catch, anyway? Beauty? Brains? Charm? To me, it’s about whether she’s the right girl – someone whose character reflects what truly matters in a relationship, whose values align with ours, and who would fit naturally and lovingly into our family. Aih... susah lah. 😅

----------------------

Dear God,

Guide my boys so that they may one day choose good wives. Let them grow with their heads and hearts in the right places, so they may focus on what is lasting and worthy – like faith and character – rather than what is fleeting and superficial, like beauty and charm.

Do not awaken love before it is ready. But when the time is right, direct their eyes and open their hearts only to those who are good, godly, and live by the fruits of Your Spirit – women who will love selflessly, live contentedly, speak thoughtfully, forgive freely, and parent with patience and grace.

May these women bring joy and not sorrow, happiness and not stress to my boys. May they strengthen, support, and grow in faith alongside their husbands through every season of life. May they draw the brothers closer to one another, and bring unity, peace, love, and joy into our family. Amen.

3rd Birthday, 3x The Fun!

Was super busy rushing around town celebrating JJ's 3rd birthday today with all his classmates. He had THREE birthday celebrations in 1 day. Siao or not?? Mommy have to prepare everything until also wanna siao liao. 😰 #Ishouldbepaidforthis #youbetterlovemeforever

First party was with his CH AM class – current classmates with whom we are not so familiar with. Second party was with his CH PM class – more familiar classmates cos we were together for 3 terms before moving up to AM. And last but not least, the third party was with his friends at LS – an enrichment centre I send the kids to for Mandarin and world knowledge. Phew! What a mad rush it was for us today!

When I was alone in the car with him, driving from one destination to another, I asked him this question:

Pam Song: JJ... Since it's your birthday today, let me know what you want to do next year.

JJ: *without hesitation* EAT.

Pam Song: LOL!! 😂😂😂 Is that all??

JJ: Eat everything. Eat my cake. Eat my cupcake.

Hahaha. Okay, Son. Eat away!

The way to this boy's heart is truly through his stomach. He had better find a woman who can cook! Or rather... his future wife had better learn to cook well or else! Hahaha.

Say Wha-?!

JZ is a real sticky barnacle when it comes to bedtime. So sticky like you wouldn't believe! He like snuggling and cuddling and hugging. A lot. Like, A LOT. A lot, a lot, a lot. Super a lot. 😅

Tonight was no different. He started climbing all over me at bedtime and trying to lie down on top of me. I, of course, pushed him off repeatedly. No more! Big boy already! Sleep on your own! And then this happened...

JZ: I want to sleep on you.

Pam Song: No.

JZ: Yessss...

Pam Song: No! You're so heavy!

JZ: Noooo... I want to sleep on you.

Pam Song: NO.

This goes on for quite a bit and I
continue to ignore him. Then suddenly...

JZ: Ok, I give you one dollar.

Pam Song: 😳😳😳

😅😂😂😂

Ok, I wasn't expecting that. Hahaha. I can't believe that 4y9m1w old son is trying to bribe me! LOL. What is the world coming to?? #kidsthesedays man... BUT! I gotta give him points for the idea la. #whateverworks right? Haha. Nice try, Son. But NO. Bribery doesn't work with me. Try flattery next time. HAHA! 😝

JJ Is Growing Up

After dropping Minda off at the airport with a teary goodbye, The Husband thought we all could have a little ice cream treat to cheer us up. I immediately said, "Ee lang kha sau wor." (Meaning, "But they're coughing wor.") But he said never mind and so we walked into the McDonald's at KLIA 2.

He was carrying JJ at the time so he just casually asked him, "Eat ice cream, ok?" And lo and behold, my youngest son displayed maturity and self control (for what I think is the first time in his life 😝) and said, "I'm cou-ping." The Husband immediately turned to me with this face ---> 😳.

Haha! Don't look at me. I was as shocked as he was! We immediately stopped dead in our tracks and tried asking again. Just to see if it was a blue-moon, one-time fluke. Hahahaha. #cannotbelieve 😂

The Husband: Eat ice cream? 🍦

JJ: *very thoughtful face* I'm coh-ping.

The Husband: So means can eat or not?

JJ: *shakes head slowwwwly* I'm coh-ping.

Well well well... I guess
the small one is growing up. 😚
And so we didn't have ice cream after all.

--------

Dear JJ,

Wow. Mommy and Papa are so impressed with your self control at 2y11m1w5d, Baby Boy! Or should we not call you "Baby Boy" anymore. Haha. Big boy already, right?? So mature in your decisions! No ice cream today, no drugs and other vices tomorrow! 😝😝😝

But seriously... we know just how irresistible food and ice cream is to you, you sweet-toothed little fella. So, this really is a super big #growingupmilestone when it comes to you. Keep it up, Son! Someone once said – one's greatest challenge is to control one's self. Well, if you can do that, you can do anything!

Love always,
Mommy & Papa
